Why you should know her: Ofra grew up in a poor Tel Aviv neighborhood, the youngest of nine children in a Yemenite Jewish family. When she was 12, she joined a local theater troupe, where she was “discovered” for her amazing mezzo-soprano voice. By the time she was 19, Ofra was Israel’s first pop star.
